SLB acquires S&P Global's upstream software to embed agentic AI into daily US shale workflows
20 May 2026

SLB has agreed to acquire S&P Global Energy's upstream geoscience and petroleum engineering software, tools embedded in the planning and reservoir workflows of shale operators across the Permian, Eagle Ford, and other high-activity US basins. The deal, announced on April 23, 2026, positions the oilfield services group at the centre of a digital shift already under way in unconventional oil production.
The acquisition is not simply a software purchase. Under the agreement, SLB and S&P Global will develop AI foundation models using Tela, SLB's agentic AI platform, and Lumi, its data framework, combined with S&P's proprietary upstream datasets. The aim is to train models on decades of shale data, then deploy them inside the applications engineers already rely on daily.
US shale carries strategic weight here. The International Energy Agency's Oil 2025 outlook expects unconventional resources to supply a growing share of global liquids through 2030, with US land activity as the largest single contributor. Operators running tight-cycle programs need tools that match their pace.
SLB's approach avoids displacing entrenched applications. By layering agentic capabilities into existing workflows rather than replacing them, the company reduces adoption friction and preserves continuity for current users. The company has signalled a measured integration timeline.
Execution risk remains. Merging workflow tools built by a financial data group with SLB's engineering platform requires careful transition management, and data governance questions around model training may attract regulatory scrutiny.
Closing is expected in the second half of 2026 or early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. For an industry accelerating digital adoption across mature and unconventional fields, the deal points toward a future where the software guiding subsurface decisions before the drill turns may matter as much as the machinery that follows.
